VMK no BS Forum - II

The site came back up after 16+ hours of down time.

I was very unimpressed with 1&1 web hosting and their lack of anything approaching customer service. The tech support line rings to India, (I think), they just said they were in the far East, and only has email communication to the people actually working on the servers in Germany. They could never give me an estimate as to when it would be back up. I did however get this nugget of information: "We don't have backup servers."

I will certainly not recommend them in the future, and will gladly post here as I find out whether they actually charge me full price this period. I sent two emails to the specified address to request a credit, but have as yet received no response from either.

Wallop - A New Social Site

Just signed up and love it already, I can upload pictures & music, I am using it as my custom radio right now...

The interface is very web 2.0 online desktop, and can be customized with any wallpaper you like and several themes.

VMK no BS Forum

At www.vmknobs.com we are experiencing a problem with the web hosting company, it seems that the physical server hosting the forum, 5 of my / my client's sites, and the sites of approximately 1000 other customers has gone down. It has been down for nearly 15 hours now, and they still can not even give an estimate as to when it will be up.

For all you VMK no BS Members, fear not, we will be back.

More details of this incident will follow, as will the chronicles of the "service" received from this host. (If I ever get any...)

The PortableApps I Use Most Often

I have still yet to lay my hands on portable organization, so the promised reviews are still 'on the list' and will be here eventually. In the mean time here is a list of PortableApps I use most regularly. It is not a comprehensive list of all that I use or have tried, and it is in no particular order.

Some of the below may require special extraction, or an initial install, to be able to copy the files to your USB drive. (Universal Extractor and Inno Setup Unpacker come in handy for such things.)

Anti-Malware:

Rogue Remover gets rid of rogue anti-spyware/adware programs.
Winpooch Watchdog detects system modifications and includes real-time anti-virus.
ClamWin Portable is an open-source anti-virus scanner.
Avast! Cleaner is a virus removal tool.

Archivers:

7-Zip Portable is a favorite made mobile.
IZArc2Go can extract almost 50 types of archives.

Browsers:

Firefox Portable enough said.
Torpark is portable Firefox + Tor for anonymous browsing.

CD-Burnning:

Small CD Writer (English Version) is a great single file program for burning CDs.

Defrag Tools:

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a nice GUI-based defrag program.
JkDefrag has commandline options and does all disks in one run.

What to Take to a Service Job

Every service job a take shows me at least one more tool to bring to the next job.

Here is the list so far:

Small tool kit (Screwdrivers, zip ties, etc...)
Software Tools (On CD & USB Flash Drive)
Live CD
Patience

The small tool kit was the most obvious, I brought that to my first service call and it wasn't even needed, but when it is, it is hard to open some cases with out it. ;-)

Software tools was also obvious yet over time the make-up of this kit has changed. Many of the calls I get are to support older operating systems so it is important to have tools that work on them. I have found that some old computers have no CD-ROM and no USB drivers so I also carry a floppy disk with the drivers needed to get the flash drive working.

Most recently I have added many common installation files to a seperate CD. Things like AIM, YIM & MSN Messenger all of the Google Pack tools and many Windows updates. I added these to avoid having to take a computer with a dial-up connection home. (or having to wait hours on site for it to download updates.) I have found that many problems can be solved with a fresh install of the offending program.

If there is a cd drive and the operating system is toast, then a live CD is a must have. With most live Linux distros you can recover and back up the data on the computer before you reinstall the old operating system. You can additionally test most of the hardware and find failures that a dead system won't show. (Dead Systems Tell No Tales... ;-) )

Patience is probably the most important tool to bring to any job. If you are impatient, your client will be as well and that will never end well for you.

I have played with a U3 device, but have found that I prefer the flexibility of the PortableApps Suite at portableapps.com. Among other features, it allows you to add any program you put in the applications folder to the "start menu" it has for a launcher.

I will get into more detail another time, but for now check out the links, and remember i have not tested all of the programs they have, so use them at your own risk.

A New Direction For CRS...

OK, Both of you who have read this...

You are as aware as I am that I don't post here as much as I could, but that is about to change. I have finally picked a direction to go with CRS.

First let me say, I have two addition blogs now, Decoy's Poetry & Just a Decoy . They will go in the different directions this one has in the past, freeing this one up to go in a more Techno Geek sort of direction.

I will focus this blog on my tech experiments & interests, which currently are focussed on playing with portable, self contained, computer aplications & Linux live-CDs.There will be reviews, recommendations, warnings & anything else that comes to mind, as I play with my USB Flash Drives.

Disturbing Headline

I receive email alerts from various "news" services on a daily basis and most get little to no reaction on my part. It may be, "Who cares?", "Oh, how sad he died.", "Whatever?" or on rare occasions, "OMG!!! That is terrible!!!" But, most often that is it.

I got the one below yesterday:

U.S. and France agree the main points of a resolution to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah

My first, very brief thought was, "Hey they agreed on something.", then I had a light go on... The U.S. & France? OK... Well most often an agreement to end fighting is between the fighting parties, so why are these two negotiating to end the hostility between Israel & Hezbollah?

I understand that the U.S. and Israel are allies & the fact that France may align with Hezbollah is not all that shocking, however do either of these "proxies" really speak for or control the actual combatants? I think not!!

If this works though it will be an interesting precedent. I then being an ally and supporter of Coca-Cola, could negotiate with some Pepsi drinker out there, and put an end to the "Cola-Wars" once and for all. Cat and dog owners could negotiate an end to the fueding between these animals. And perhaps most exiting of all morticians and doctors could negotiate to put and end to death!!! (I for one don't think I want to live forever, in a world this messed up.)

If Israel & Hezbollah agree to the main points of a resolution to end the hostilities, that would be news... This is just more political posturing by two countries who will scarcely affect the final outcome.

Why is "Full Disclosure" NO Disclosure?

When buying or trying to refinance a home, our governmental friends have decided that the consumer MUST have, "Full Disclosure" of everything that may, might or will happen.

On the surface this seems like a good thing, they have to tell you that there is a garbage dump a mile away that makes it stink or that there is an earthquake fault running through the back yard. They also have to tell you about all the fees, insurance options and interest adjustments.

Great They can hide nothing!!!! Woo Hoo we win!!! Or so some politician somewhere must be thinking. However, they are sadly mistaken in their thoughts.

The dishonest people will always find a way to sneak something past and now they can do it in plain sight. All they have really done is create a mountain of paperwork so large, that even the honest people struggle to find and point out all the really important items being disclosed.

It used to be that the needed one and two page forms that could be read, understood & completed by the buyer. Now we have enough forms, disclaimers & disclosure statements to make a speed reading lawyer's day go by. No "regular person" has the time or understanding needed to really digest it all, thus it is scanned at best and misunderstood or skipped too often.

So, we are back at least to where we were on the disclosure issue from the standpoint of the consumer being informed. The difference now is that the consumer has no recourse when they have a legitimate complaint as it would now go like this:

Consumer: "There is toxic waste bubbling up in my back yard."

Company: "Yes, that happens every few years."

Consumer: "Nobody informed me of that."

Company: "We most certainly did. It is in the 3rd sentence of the fourth paragraph on addendum A3 of page 357 in packet X, 'Disclosure of Unimportant Things We Encourage You to Sign Without Reading', I see here that you signed it."

Consumer: "But this seems an important thing that should have been highlighted."

Company: "Perhaps, however, as you have already purchased the home, you may feel different when you sell it. Have a nice day & thank you for calling"

VMK no BS Forum

For those of you who have not yet heard, Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom [VMK] is a free multiplayer online game. It is themed as their parks are, and is an obvious marketing program... But, it rocks!!!

Though it was aimed at the 8-13 age range, there are a large number of ancient Disney fans that play as well. I am one of them. There are several forums and discussion boards that are devoted to VMK, and most Disney forums have a section devoted to it. I have made many great friends in these places, however most of them have become over run with... (Gasp!!!) The originally targeted market for the game.

So I, and several of the other ancient VMK players decided that there was need for a forum where the childish BS would not reign, and about a month ago VMKnoBS was born.

Meebo & MeeboMe

Meebo is a nifty little web app that lets you IM in AIM, Yahoo, GoogleTalk, MSN, IRC & Jabber all in one webpage. You can even create an account to save your preferences if you like. It is not required however, and there are various ways to protect your privacy if you feel the need.

Today they added a feature called MeeboMe, that creates a widget for use on any webpage you may want to install it on. "What is a widget?" Some of you may wonder...

This will be my first place to test it, but the idea is that any of you, can IM me from here. Just type into that widget and you appear on my contacts list. I believe it should even let you change your nickname if you don't want to be anonymous.

Of Penguins & Snakes

I have once again started 'playing' with Linux, and you would expect of me, (If you know me), I have been exploring it to the fullest extent able. I have burned no less than 28 distros to CD/DVD & also tried several of the BSD flavors as well.

So, at the moment my laptop has, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Fedora & the dreaded M$ Windblow$ XP installed. I hope to eventually pick one distro that meets my needs and start moving friends, family and clients to it, without the fear of being unable to support them hanging over me.

Ubuntu is so far the most promising, but the latest version does not play well with the touch pad on my laptop. Of course none of my users, has a laptop so this is of little consequence to them.

I also decided, it was high time to learn to program again, as the dusty old memories of basic on an Apple 2e were of little use in accomplishing anything I want done these days. So after a bit of research, I have discovered the joy that is Python.

What a wonderful language, easy to write, easy to read and yet amazingly powerful. I have learned the basics, the minimal basic mind you, in about a week. That has been enough to truly start a hunger in me to 'learn it all', (yes, I know this is not possible), that I my write or modify programs that others will find as useful as I do. That said, here is a quick and very standard example of Python, the universal first program written by an student in any language:

print 'hello world'

The line starting with # is a comment, then next line is the entire program needed to have Python print hello world to the screen. Even my grandma would be able to read that.

Life Never Stops

Well... Until death anyway.

So, again time has passed at an alarming rate and my intentions of writing here, on a regular basis, have gone the way of the Dodo.

Yet, here I am now.

And why? Well... I don't really know, but let's take advantage of it while we can.

My nephew, is doing pretty well, and does not appear to have the heart defect, most often the cause of early death, found in many with DiGeorges Syndrome. Praise the Lord!!

Life is still hectic, VMK is still a time consumer, blogs still do not write themselves and I am likely still the only one reading this anyway.

Yes, I Am Still Alive

I do in fact live on!!

Sorry for the neglect, but with life in general there is not enough time for everything, and VMK, (Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom), has severely cut into my blogging time.

So here is a quick update:

My daughter is flourishing in kindergarten.

My home life is good. My work life is decent.

VMK is fun.

Life is mostly a good thing. (As I know, it is all only temporary anyway, and that Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior will return, perhaps before I go to him first.)

Now on the down side:

My sister-in-law gave birth to a baby boy on October 24th. He has been diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome. (I didn't know much about it either, go Google it!!)

I have received little news since the November 10th news of diagnosis, but as he was born with no Thymus Gland, his immune system is not likely to develop with out a transplant. And though I have not heard yet, it is likely that he may have many other related problems including possible heart defects.

PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM IF YOU KNOW THE LORD!!!

I will try to update frequently, or at least as frequently as I hear anything. (Yes, I know that you,[most likely a future me], are probably the only one reading this, but, as bad as your memory is you may need this to help you recall what happened.)

Life Is Not Fair!!!

No, it is most certainly not fair.

I think most of us learn this by the time we are 4 or 5 years old. However, here I am 30 years later, and I have come to 2 far more important realizations. (If you are not a born again Christian they will most certainly seem as foolish as can be to you, but, here they are for all to see.)

1. I now know why life is not fair.

Life is not fair because this world, and every life & living thing in it are tainted by sin.

2. I also now know that while unfair, it is not as bad as it could be.

I, as a sinner, deserve nothing less than an eternity separated from God. An eternity suffering in hell, after dying on a cross to pay for my sins. However my Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, paid that price for me, and not just for me, but for you also. There has never been any person on this Earth, who if they had been the only sinner, Jesus would not have still come and paid the price for them alone. Yet the perfection of God's love was such that He, as Jesus Christ, was able to pay the price for all, in His one perfect sacrifice.

Now if we all, as sinners, deserve the death of the cross and eternal separation from God, served in hell, then is it really so bad when...

The person in front of you in the '12 items or less' isle has 13 items
You spill sauce on your favorite new shirt or dress
You get bad service at a store or restaurant
Someone takes the credit for your ideas or work
You are falsely accused of something, even if you are punished
A loved one is sick or even passes away
If you are sick, perhaps even terminally so

Fair, no none of these things is fair, nor are they deserved. However, when you compare them to the things we all deserve, then it is immediately apparent how skewed our perspective is when we focus on the 'unfair' thing that happen.

In fact, (and mind you if you are not yet a Christian this will not make sense), you may start to realize the reality of, 'giving thanks in all things', for even in the most unfair of circumstances... Are you hanging on a cross? Are you spending eternity in hell? (I know some jobs may seem close.)

To Congress, Legislatures, County Boards, City Councils and all other, (Tax Funded), Governing Bodies & Individuals,

Please, Stop wasting our money!

I am so sick of hearing that any given city council, or county board, has spent time and money debating and voting on resolutions, in support of this or opposition to that, which are of no use because the this or that they are talking about is not in their jurisdiction.

I am thrilled that City A's council is in support of the troops, (and if the resolution provides anything for constituent veterans, it is not one of the type I am addressing), I am happy to hear that City B's council is against killing the blue tailed gnatcatchers in Eastern Birdistan. I am even overjoyed with the fact that the council of City C believes that professional athletes should take there responsibility as role models, (like it or not, it comes with the job and the huge salary), more seriously.

I am appalled however, that they spend their time, and taxpayer money and resources, (who paid for the paper the meeting minutes are printed on), on these 'issues' where they are guaranteed to have little or no effect.

Are there no potholes in these cities? Is there no crime? Is no one in these towns homeless or hungry? Are all city services fully staffed and funded? Are all public facilities clean, safe and well maintained?

If the answer to all of these questions is yes, first please tell me where you are because, I have never seen such a magical place. Second, (with the exception of a small emergency fund), give the taxpayers the rest of their hard earned money back!

I can by no means speak for anyone but myself, I do know that I want my city, county, state and country, to use my money wisely and not take more of it than is needed.

If congress has issues with athletes using steroids, fine, pass a law to make steroids illegal. If they are already illegal, then enforce the laws, or perhaps change the penalty to a level that it will truly make the risk of being caught greater than the possible benefits of using them. Then get on with the business of the nation. I certainly did not want my tax dollars spent on hearings with retired, (or event current), baseball players saying they did or did not use steroids.

I found the entire Terry Schiavo ordeal very tragic, from any point of view, however, it should have been an issue handled within their family. At no point should Congress or The President been using there time, (on my dime), or resources for this very personal matter. All they accomplished was to find a new way to use our money to increase division in our nation over issues they will never resolve.

Rant done, soap box back in cupboard.

I just wanted to take a moment to... well, I can't remember quite what it was just now, but at least it brought me back to the blog. (Sounds like a horror film serial, "Back to the Blog IV - The Quest for Your Money")

Anyway, I know both of you were wondering when I would have something useful to say, and I just want you to know that I have been wondering the same thing. This blog is after all just an experimental way for me to think out loud, or at least in type. A way to vent, ponder, create, complain and yes even ramble.

Time Flies When You Have Pneumonia

The Lament of a Loyal Coca-Cola Man

I have always been a Coke drinker. If a restaurant has only pepsi products, bring out the iced tea or water. However, I find a little variety to be a nice thing.

So for years, I have gone to "In-N-Out Burgers", (For those of you not in the extreme southwestern USA-The best burgers around, and has the consistently best fountain mix of Coca-Cola.) To get Coke, with just a little bit of their lemonade mixed in.

Way back when Cherry Coke was introduce, I had hoped Lemon Coke would follow close behind. After many years had passed... Along comes Diet Coke with Lemon, (all I can taste is the diet sweetener.) Could it be? Should I get my hopes up again? NO!!

Then Pepsi came out with pepsi Twist, I was curious, and Vanilla Coke was just not what I was looking for... So I tried it. I hate to admit it, but I liked it, not as well as my home-made In-N-Out mix, but it was good. (I despised the fact that Coca-Cola had driven me to a pepsi product and lamented that I had given-in to my curiosity.)Surely, I thought Coke would respond, after all there was by this time Vanilla Pepsi. Sadly NO. Diet Coke with Lime was the weak reply.

Now finally Coke has put citrus into Coca-Cola, but it is the lime that wins out again. It is good, and like Cherry Coke & Vanilla Coke, I am sure I will enjoy it every once in a while. It is however, not Lemon Coke, which mixed properly is almost better than the original. (I said almost!!!)

Nothing beats an Ice-Cold Coca-Cola in an 8 oz. glass Bottle. But, when I crave that little bit of lemon, and can't get to an In-N-Out... I put on the hat and dark glasses, breakout the trenchcoat and head to a store where nobody knows me... and I buy a p..ppp.ppp.pppp.....pepsi product that Coca-Cola just refuses to provide.

Please, if you just happen to be in the upper management of Coca-Cola, end my suffering. Introduce Lemon Coke, that my lips may never again be sullied by the evil cola again.(Yes. Yes. I know. The odds were astronomical. But, if you tell 2 friends, and they tell 2 friends, and so on and so on... Perhaps on of those people might be.)

I am in fact still alive, and I have not abandoned this blog yet.

I have every intention of puting something on this site most weekdays, or at least once a week.

As you can clearly see, intentions alone get nothing done!!!

As you can probably tell by now,(with this eclectic group of posts), I have not really formed much of a plan as to what sort of blog this will be. It will most likely be a mish-mosh of the random thoughts that float around in my head, or at least the ones that leak out. So sit back, relax, kick off your shoes & try not to be to annoyed or afraid.

Yes, I realize of course that I may very well be the only one reading this, but, if you are then I was wrong again.
